Today the under 15’s came back to Schramms Reserve on a perfect day for footy. We celebrated Azaha’s 50th game. Azaha is a tackling and contested ball machine and highly respected and admired through the team.
We welcomed back Finn M and Seth A but still have Paris and James on the sidelines. In previous games it has been the first quarter which has really let us down so that needed to change today as we were still chasing our first win of the season.
The first quarter today however was the opposite to that of previous weeks where the midfield lead by Jackson strung together 4 quick clearances where Finn Carman was the beneficiary piling on 3 goals in a flash. This set the tone for the first quarter where we played as a team and for each other allowing us to skip out to a 28 to 0 lead.
The second quarter started slowly until Jack hit the scoreboard for his first major however we shifted away from playing team football and became selfish and were not running back defensively. This allowed Macleod to slot 2 quick goals towards the end of the quarter trimming our lead back to 4 goals at the main break.
After a stern reminder of how we wanted to play the second half was our most consistent and impressive football to date as we found our form from the first quarter. Max kicked 2 quick goals to push the lead out to 38 points before Jye B and Jesse chimed in with 1 each to push the game beyond Macleod.
The final quarter was scrappy but overall pleasing as everyone played right until the final siren with 2 goals to Jesse and 1 to Jackson providing the icing on the cake as we ran out winners by 66 points notching our first win for the season.
Credit must go to the Macleod players as they struggled with 15 players but fought right until the very end and gained a lot of respect from the group.
Azaha was fantastic today in his 50th DJFC game but he had plenty of helpers as everyone played there role and stuck to the game plan for the most part.
Better Players Robbie Hausegger, Jai Mudher, Azaha Nicholson, Jackson Lee, Finn Carman, Owen Rice, Jesse McCarthy
Goal Kickers Finn C 3, Jesse 3, Max 2, Matt 1, Jackson 1, Jye B 1, Jack F 1
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums at DJFC
Doncaster 4-12-36 def by Brunswick 10-7-67
Firstly we welcomed 2 new players to the team who have slotted in perfectly. Seth Adams and Tom Brown, welcome to you boys and your families.
I would also like to thank Glenn Grandy and Nathan Thompson who have coached the team previously in a brilliant way.
Today we ventured out to Gillion Oval where we took on Brunswick in poor conditions.
Before the game started you could sense the boys were very nervous due the absence of noise however you wouldn’t have known it after Max Hudson nailed the first of the day within 2 minutes. However after the quick start the boys took a backwards step and Brunswick started to get a run on with a goal out the back which highlighted the lack of defensive running. Brunswick took a 1 goal lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a struggle as Brunswick were kicking with a huge breeze the backline was put under extreme pressure and stood up fantastically lead by Rohan who played a brilliant complete game. The second half finished with leaking 2 late goals on the stroke of half time to push Brunswick’s lead to 21 at half time.
The third quarter the boys came out firing and the pressure was a huge improvement on the first half lead by bone crunching tackles and all-out attack on the ball from Azaha. The ball was trapped in one corner of the Doncaster 50 but could not convert then Brunswick to their credit pin pointed their way through our set up and converted an easy opportunity. Doncaster trailed Brunswick by 25 points at 3 quarter time.
The last quarter followed the same pattern as the third with Jackson dominating in the midfield however we just couldn’t convert our opportunities in front of goal. The first game in a new division for the boys whilst the scoreboard says a 5 goal loss anyone watching the game would have said it was a lot closer.
This year we have elected 2 captains and 2 vice captains for this year. Jackson Lee and Finn Carman are the captains for the season with Keegan Kirlis and Robbie Hausegger holding the vice-captain roles.
Jackson Lee, Azaha Nicholson, Rohan Grover, Jye Bethune, Keegan Kirlis and Finn Carman.
Keegan 2, Jack 1 and Max 1.
Looking forward to next week
